Hmm, interesting, so the GOG Diamond Edition doesn't create the
portraits directory (which can be empty)?

I've marked it as optional in xoreos now, with rev f0568e6e.
Update your checkout and recompile.

Of course, as a workaround, you could have just created an empty
"portraits" directory in ~/games/nwn/. :P
